Distributed Resource Management (DRM), workload management, scheduling, queuing, batch processing

What it means: Scheduling is a technique born in cluster computing, making it possible to optimally manage execution of multiple applications on multiple machines or processors. Scheduling ensures that all processors are always busy, resulting in overall execution speedup. It can also offer numerous advanced features, including complex rules and policies. The system that oversees the scheduling process is called a scheduler. “Queuing system” or “batch processing system” are also synonyms for “scheduler”. Nowadays, as scheduling systems became more sophisticated, they are more often referred to as Distributed Resource Managers (DRM) or Workload Managers.
